Electric tea-strainer
The handle of an electric fly-swat contains a useful circuit for converting 3V DC into something like 1500V, and it does it cheaply too. If you remove the bat, and wire the two outputs separately to the mesh of a metal tea strainer and a ground lead, you can make a very cheap static grass applicator.
